Abstract | 311P/PANSTARRS is one of the two targets of the Chinese asteroid exploration mission Tianwen-II. The estimation of the gravity field and rotation parameters is an important part of the mission. Optical landmark observations directly record the relative relationship between the asteroid and probe. For this purpose, we investigate the role of the addition of landmark observations to radio-tracking data in achieving precise orbit determination and deriving the physical parameters of 311P. More specifically, we use a linear re-weighting fusion scheme to aggregate these two heterogeneous data to determine 311P's gravitational field and rotational parameters. Our results show that landmark observations enhance parameter estimation drastically. We conduct extensive experiments to understand how to optimize the use of landmark observations. Besides, we find that the upper bound error on 311P ephemeris for estimating a 2nd-degree gravity field model is 5 km. |
